Overview
Steeped in mystery, straddling two mountains and shrouded in clouds, Machu Picchu (Old Peak in the Quechua language) will sweep you into the world of Inca legend. Revered from pre-Inca times as a sacred site, the Incas built one of the most extraordinary cities of the ancient world on Machu Picchu, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
A ‘symphony in stone’, Machu Picchu said to have been a secret ceremonial city of the Incas, totally self-contained and completely invisible from below. Located 2000 feet above the Urubamba river, the ruins have beautiful terraces, ceremonial baths, palaces, temples and tombs, and some 150 houses! The carved rock pillar of Intihuatana (Hitching Post of the Sun) is particularly impressive and stands testimony to the Incas’ significant astronomical skills.

Inca Heritage Tour: Excursion to Machu Pichu

Itinerary
You will be picked up very early from your hotel in Cusco and taken to the railway station. From here, you will board your train (either the "Backpacker train" or the "Vistadome train") that will take you to Machu Picchu.
Starting from Cusco, the train journey takes approximately 3 hours as it makes its way along the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba to the Lost City of the Incas.
Refreshments will be served on the train (payable direct) and you will arrive mid-morning at the town of Aguas Calientes. Here, you will be transported by coach for the half-hour journey to the top of the mountain where the citadel of Machu Picchu is perched on a mist-shrouded mountain peak surrounded by lush cloud forest.
Enjoy a guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins. The ruins are separated into an agricultural zone and an urban area on the eastern slope of Machu Picchu mountain. The urban zone includes a civil sector where dwellings and canals were built and a sacred sector with temples, mausoleums, squares and royal houses. The buildings are made of stone with roofs built of tree trunks and thatched with ichu or straw and with the highest degree of expertise displayed in the religious buildings.
This will be followed by lunch and time at leisure in the early afternoon to walk amongst the ruins and even get close to the llamas as they wander freely over the ruins!
If you want, you can also make the 1-hour climb to the peak of Huayna Picchu in the same area before taking the afternoon train back to Cusco.
Upon arrival at the Cusco railway station, you will be picked up and dropped back at your hotel where your tour ends.
