Go off the beaten track to find marvelous Gaudi masterpieces outside Barcelona city center.

See two extraordinary gates in Gaudi's fluid and highly decorative style: the stone entrance to the Miralles estate, a piece of sheer Art Nouveau fantasy, and the fabulous wrought iron Dragon Gate at Güell Pavilions.

Take time to tour the ground-breaking Colonia Güell Crypt. See how Gaudi broke away from straight lines and geometric shapes and used the sinuous forms and flowing lines he saw in nature.

Learn how he made his curved designs work in architectural terms, so that they were as strong and safe as conventional structures. Marvel at the loving care with which this genius shaped his work to blend with its surroundings.

Admire the glorious decoration in the Crypt – the crosses, Gaudi's trademark mosaics, dazzling Art Nouveau stained glass and a seashell font.

Look out for the orange umbrellas. Train: The nearest RENFE and FGC station is 'Barcelona Plaça Catalunya'. Tube: Metro lines 3 and 1 have stops nearby. Bus: Nos 41, 55, 17 stop close by

Barcelona – Gaudí Beyond the City Tour - Itinéraire


Barcelona – Gaudí Beyond the City Tour is a 'must' for anyone interested in art and architecture. There is no hotel pick up for this excursion. To meet your guide, make your way to Pl Catalunya in the city center (opposite the Tourist Office, in front of Banco de España and Deutsche Bank) and look for the orange umbrellas. The meeting point is easily reached by public transport.

You will depart with your English-speaking guide, in a comfortable air-conditioned coach, to see off-the-beaten-track masterpieces by visionary architect Antoni Gaudí.

You will pass Passeig de Gràcia, an elegant avenue with exciting Modernist (Art Nouveau) buildings. These include two of Gaudí’s famous houses – Casa Batlló and Casa Milà – as well as the Casa Amatller designed by Puig i Cadafalch.

You will stop briefly at the Miralles Estate, where you can see an amazing Modernist gate and a short section of wavy wall. Designed by Gaudí and built between 1901 and 1902, the wall originally went all around the estate. It has a stone base covered in white ceramic mosaic and the gate is crowned by a typical Gaudí iron cross. You will also see Barcelona's only statue of Gaudí.

The next stop, about 15 minutes later, is at Güell Pavilions, former summer residence of Gaudí's aristocratic patron, Count Eusebi de Güell. Gaudí designed the striking Dragon Gate, the gatekeeper’s lodge, the stables and the coach house. Notice how the walls and the domes of the stables are covered with tiles, ceramics and mosaics.

Your third stop, about 20 minutes later, is at Gaudí’s Colonia Güell Crypt. This architectural gem (now a World Heritage Site) is part of an unfinished church originally commissioned by Count Eusebi de Güell. Building ceased in 1914, but the lower nave, since called a 'crypt', was nevertheless an outstanding achievement full of architectural innovations, both technical and decorative.

As you explore the Crypt, your guide can point out the numerous novel features used by Gaudí in his search for synthesis between structural layout, building techniques and architectural forms. You will also see many enchanting decorative elements including Gaudinian crosses, glass and ceramic mosaics, floral stained glass windows, and a seashell font.

On the coach journey back to Barcelona you will see a Modernist industrial estate, which in its day greatly improved the lives of the working people. You will drive through some rural districts before entering Barcelona by the Gran Via and driving through Plaça d'Espanya, one of Barcelona's most important squares.

At the end of your fascinating tour you will be dropped off at the meeting point in Pl Catalunya.
