Now the country is reclaiming its place in the wine-making world and on this delightful private tour you will have the chance to experience this exciting renaissance at first hand.

At historic cellars in the charming wine-growing region of the Little Carpathians, you can roll your tongue around some delicious and expensive quality wines such as ice wine and straw wine. The proud vineyard owner will be only too happy to tell you all about the wines and how they are made.

Wine Cellar Tour from Bratislava - Itinerary


There are two ways to join your Wine Cellar Tour from Bratislava. You can arrange to be collected from your hotel in Bratislava, or from the train station. Alternatively, make your way on foot to the front of the Opera House/ Slovak National Theatre on Hviezoslavovo Square, opposite the Carlton Hotel.

This is a private tour so you can choose the start time to suit yourselves. With your knowledgeable English-speaking driver/guide, you will set off in an air-conditioned minivan through the hilly and picturesque Little Carpathians wine region.

Slovakia lies on the northern edge of the wine-making world. Its hot summers and cold winters are perfect for producing fruity whites and full-bodied reds. Some vineyards here have been making wines since Roman times.

Just 30 km (18 miles) from Bratislava you will stop at the only mountain winery in Slovakia. Here you will be welcomed by the owner with a home-made aperitif. Later, you will have the chance to walk around the vineyard and learn about Slovak viticulture.

Afterwards, you will see a presentation of antique family agricultural machines and can learn about the production of special high quality sweet wines such as straw and ice wine. Ice wine is produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. Straw wine, or raisin wine, is made from grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice.

You will then enjoy wine tasting in your host's historic wine cellar, where you will sample high quality wines including the renowned ice wine. Other regional wines you might taste include Riesling, Veltliner, Silvaner, Devin, Frankovka Modra and St Lauren Barrique.

Simple snacks such as top quality cheeses, sausage and homemade bread (plus mineral water) will be served to accompany the delicious wines.

Later, you will have the chance to enjoy a second wine tasting at another of the region's historic wine cellars. This is a private tour so you can go at your own pace, but the usual schedule is to spend around 1 hour 15 minutes on each tasting session and about 1 hour 30 minutes driving through the delightful Little Carpathians countryside.

At the end of your delightful tour you will be dropped off wherever you choose in Bratislava.
