Itinerary
There are two ways to join your Little Carpathians Tour from Bratislava . You can arrange to be collected from your hotel in Bratislava, or from the train station. Alternatively, make your way on foot to the front of the Opera House/ Slovak National Theatre on Hviezoslavovo Square, opposite the Carlton Hotel.
You will set off with your English-speaking driver/guide in an air-conditioned minivan. Your route takes you through the hilly and picturesque Little Carpathians wine region . Some vineyards here have been making wines since Roman times.
Your first stop is at a traditional pottery workshop in Modra . This little town, nestled in the Little Carpathians’ foothills, is famous for its blue and white majolica pottery . Your visit lasts about an hour and you will see all aspects of the potter’s art – throwing the pots, hand painting, and the final firing of each spectacular finished piece.
Next, you will visit one of Slovakia’s finest fortified buildings – the magnificent Cervený Kamen (Red Stone) Castle . Constructed in the 13th century primarily for defensive purposes, it was later converted into a beautiful and luxurious place to live.
You will be given a guided tour , which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. You will be shown the richly furnished salons, plus the bedrooms, grand hall, library, chapel and ingenious defense systems. On the way, you can view a splendid collection of historical weapons, porcelain and portraits.
Your tour ends in the Castle's huge cellars, said to be the largest in central Europe, where you'll be treated to a wine tasting session. You can sample typical central European or Slovak wines such as the dark ruby red Frankovka Modra with its smooth berry fragrance. Whites might include Riesling (from the well-known German grape variety) and Veltliner , full-bodied and dry with a firm mineral backbone.
During the tasting you will be served appetizing snacks including cheeses, bread and tasty sausage.
Leaving the Castle, you'll be driven back to Bratislava. On the way, enjoy the scenic views of vineyards, forests, fortified manor houses and attractive Romanesque churches.
At the end of your delightful excursion, you will be dropped off at the front of the Opera House/ Slovak National Theatre on Hviezoslavovo Square.
