Located in the South Island, Kaikoura is a small coastal village that has an incredible vista; the large mountain range of Seaward Kaikouras provides a dramatic backdrop to the town centre located on a small peninsula extending out into the Pacific Ocean.

Cruise in the open seas on modern vessels and join a pod of the playful dusky dolphins for an unforgettable swim. Dusky dolphins are very gregarious and highly social. Their spectacular leaps, jumps, side slaps and back flips make for some great photo opportunities. One of the most spectacular leaps performed by the duskies is their trademark somersault repeated several times much to the delight of the onlookers.

Swimming with the Dolphins in Kaikoura - Itinerary


You will be picked up from your hotel in Christchurch and taken in an air-conditioned luxury vehicle for a marine adventure to Kaikoura. The highlight of this tour is swimming with the dolphins. An English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

Travel through the scenic countryside of pastoral North Canterbury to Kaikoura where mountains meet sea. Listen to informative commentary aboard the coach during your journey.

On arrival in Kaikoura lunch may be taken at the Aromas Cafe and Restaurant (optional and payable direct) or enjoy free time to explore Kaikoura.

Join the Swim with Dolphins tour with Dolphin Encounter. All these ocean-going boats are fitted with hot deck showers and toilets and have covered areas for protection against the elements. The tour will last approximately three to three and a half hours and a complete guided commentary is given throughout.

After coming on board you will receive your wetsuits and snorkeling gear to fully equip you to swim in the sea with the acrobatic dusky dolphins. The dusky dolphins are reputed to be amongst the most acrobatic of the dolphin species, and their spectacular leaps, jumps, side slaps and back flips, are sure to elicit shouts of joy!

Those not inclined for a swim can enjoy watching the antics of these playful creatures from the deck. There will also be chance to see other marine mammals such as orca (killer whales), pilot whales, New Zealand fur seals, and Hector’s dolphins.

After your swim, refresh yourself with a hot shower on board the boat before returning to the shore.

The tour continues with a visit to a fur seal colony on the rocky shores which surround Kaikoura. This stop provides a great photo opportunity.

At the end of this memorable tour you will be dropped back at your hotel in Christchurch.

This is an open water experience where a variety of sea conditions can be encountered. Therefore previous snorkeling knowledge is a definite advantage.
