Itinerary
There is no hotel pick-up. Please make your way to the Cork Kerry Tourism Office on Grand Parade to kick off this Cork Modern City Walking Tour. You will be accompanied by a highly knowledgeable English-speaking guide who will fill every minute of this one and a half hour tour with fascinating facts about modern and historical Cork.
You will visit the following sites on this tour, all of which will only be seen by from the outside:
• Old city wall: Erected during the 13th and 14th centuries, these medieval walls were badly damaged during the Siege of Cork in 1690, when James II attempted to wrest control of the English throne away from King William II.
• Courthouse: A grand, pillared Roman façade sets this building apart from the traditional architecture of Cork.
• Fenn’s Quay: A family-run restaurant situated in one of the last surviving Georgian terraces in Ireland.
• Patrick Street: Cork’s main shopping district.
• Oliver Plunkett Street: Another popular shopping destination and a center of Cork nightlife.
• English Market: Built in 1786, with roots reaching all the way back to 1610, this market sells traditional Cork fare alongside fruits, meats and vegetables from around the world.
• Crawford Art Gallery: Features more than 2000 works ranging from Greek sculpture casts to the works of 18th century Irish painters.
• Cork Opera House: A strikingly modern building with a rich historical pedigree, the Opera House helps constitute the cultural heartbeat of Cork.
• South Mall: The business and financial center of Cork.
While you walk, your guide will fill you in on the history of this colorful place, with topics that include: the abandonment of the city walls, the development of old city quays and waterways, the growth of trade and population, the rise of the Ascendancy class, the rise of Catholic power, the Great Famine, railway and port developments, the War of Independence, and the burning of Cork.
You tour will conclude at the Cork Kerry Tourism Office.
