Cork's Monk, Vikings and Normans Walking Tour - Itinerary

You will begin your walking and historical tour at Cork Kerry Tourism Office, Grand Parade.

This tour will take you to a number of sites including St Finbarre's Cathedral. Dedicated to Cork's patron saint of the same name, it is situated in a quiet part of town, south of the Lee. It has an exuberant triple-spired edifice built in Gothic Revival style, and decorated with stone tracery. Inside, the painted and gilded ceiling shows Christ surrounded by angels. The stained glass windows below tell the story of Christ's life.

You will go on to see Elizabeth Fort. Built in the 16th century on the site of a monastic settlement, Elizabeth Fort was destroyed in 1603 by citizens of Cork in an act of defiance against King James I. What remains today which you will be able to see is the outer wall of the fort, ordered to be rebuilt by Lord Mountjoy. Since 1690 it has been used as a prison and a barracks, and is now a police station. It was used by the Black and Tans in 1920 and later by Republicans during the civil war who burned it down.

Moving on to North Main Street, is Skiddy's Castle. The lane between the two shops was once known as Skiddy's Castle Lane. John Skiddy, a member of one of the merchant families which controlled Cork in medieval times, built Skiddy's Castle in 1445. The 'castle' was actually an urban tower house. Skiddy's Castle stood near the junction of present-day Adelaide Street and the North Main Street. It is clearly shown on the earliest maps of Cork.

Two interesting remnants of the Siege of Cork (1690) can be seen in the city.

You will end your tour at Cork Kerry Tourism Office, Grand Parade.
