Mexico City Tour and Xochimilco Canal Cruise - Itinerary

You will be picked up in an air-conditioned coach from your hotel in Mexico City. Accompanied by a bilingual guide speaking English and Spanish, you will be taken on a sightseeing tour of Mexico City.

Take a trip to the National Palace where you will see beautiful murals painted by the great muralist Diego Riviera. Further on, proceed to the Constitution Square, also known as Central Plaza or Zocalo, a massive concrete area signed with a giant flag. Inside the underground Zocalo station, you’ll see historical reproductions of the Square, exhibits of ceremonial offerings and stone statues of goddesses among others.

Continue to the Metropolitan Cathedral which represents a synthesis of art forms in New Spain. The church has a baroque and neo classical façade, its Altar of Forgiveness, the sacristy, and the Altar of Kings are worth looking out for!

In addition to the main avenues, you will also visit Chapultepec Park, noteworthy for its centuries-old forest which encircles the Chapultepec Hill and for the castle which crowns its summit. Explore the most important residential zones of the city and the Pink Zone (Zona Rosa).

Further on, head to the south for a panoramic tour of the World Trade Center, the Siqueiros Cultural Polyforum, the monumental Mexico Bull Ring and the Insurgentes Theatre with its mosaic murals by artist Diego Riviera.

Proceed to the University City located in Coyoacan borough in the southern part of Mexico City. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the university encloses the Olympic Stadium, the Cultural Centre, an ecological reserve, the Central Library and some museums. Interestingly, the university was built on a bed of solidified lava to replace the scattered buildings in downtown Mexico City.

Continue to the waters of the Xochimilco Canals where you can take a traditional boat cruise down ancient Aztec canals. The place is famous for its extended series of canals on the ancient Lake Xochimilco. Sail on colorful trajineras, a traditional boat between chinampas (floating gardens – an ancient Mesoamerican agriculture) covered with flowers. The shores of Xochimilco Canals are lined with houses and docks, and are a favorite haunt of Mexican families and tourists on the weekends. Along the way, stop for lunch at a local restaurant (cost not included).

Further on, head to the impressive colonial district of Coyoacan and take a walk down the Francisco Sosa Street lined with architectural marvels from the 16th century. Also stop by at the Church of Saint John the Baptist and marvel at its paintings.

After exploring the historical district of Coyoacan, you will be dropped back to your hotel in Mexico City.
