Moscow Tour - Novodevichy Monastery - Overview

The Novodevichy Monastery is a major tourist attraction of Moscow. Situated on the banks of the Moscow River, the Novodevichy Convent is one of the most beautiful buildings in Moscow and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Novodevichy, or "New Maidens Convent" in English, was founded by Vasily III in 1524 to commemorate the recapture of Smolensk from the Lithuanians in 1514. Admire the valuable wall frescos of the 16th century and a magnificent carved iconostasis with icons of famous imperial masters, in the Smolensk Cathedral.

Moscow Tour - Novodevichy Monastery - Itinerary


You are picked up from your hotel in Moscow and taken to the Novodevichy Monastery.

Founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili Ioanovich, the original Novodevichy Monastery was enclosed by fortified walls and contained 12 towers. The structure served as a convent for ladies of noble birth and was host to many famous Russian figures throughout its history, including Boris Gudonov and Peter the Great’s elder sister Princess Sophia (who was banished there in 1679 by her brother).

The tour will take you to Preobrazhenskaya Church (the Church of the Transfiguration), the outstanding Smolensky Sobor (Smolensk Cathedral) and the Novodevichy cemetery in which many notable people are buried including Chekov, Gogol and Stalin’s wife Nadezhda Alliluyeva.

You will be returned to your hotel at the end of the tour.
