Kilkenny Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour - Itinerary


The tour starts from the Parade outside Kilkenny Castle. On this Hop-On-Hop-Off tour, you have the freedom to plan your own sightseeing itinerary. With 11 stops covering all of Kilkenny’s main attractions such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Francis Abbey and The Black Abbey among others, this tour provides the perfect introduction to the city.

Your ticket is valid for 24 hours from when you first board one of the buses. Buses run from 1030h to 1700h (10:30 am to 05:00 pm) around every 1 hour. Your ticket allows you unlimited use, meaning you can hop-on and hop-off as many times as you like at any of the designated spots! There is live commentary in English on this tour. The stop points include:

• Kilkenny Castle: Standing tall on the banks of River Nore, this 12th century castle is a colossal stone structure with huge drum towers. Wander down its Long Gallery and look at portraits of the Butler family including the Earl of Ormonde, who bought the castle in the 14th century. Explore the castle basement, featuring the Butler Gallery with exhibits of Irish art dating from the 18th century to the present day.
• St. Francis’ Abbey: St. Francis Abbey was founded in the 13th century by the Franciscans who came to Ireland at around 1226. Due to the expansion of Smithwicks Brewery, the nave and chancel of the abbey now survive within the grounds of the brewery, now a part of the Guinness Ireland Group.
• The Black Abbey: It is also known as the Convent of the One and Undivided Trinity and was founded by Willaim Marshall the younger, for the Dominician Friars in the 13th century. Converted into a parish church in mid-19th century, the present church has a distinct ‘L’ shape. Marvel at its stone work and fine wooden roof.
• St. Canice’s Cathedral: This is a 13th century cathedral and is considered the second longest cathedral in Ireland. The cathedral’s architectural style is gothic and is built of limestone. Look-out for the stained glass windows, particularly the East window which is a replica of the original 13th century window.
• St. John’s Catholic Church: It is a beautiful Catholic church in Kilkenny surrounded by lush green lawns. Its spacious interior and an incredible altar are worth looking-out for.
• Canal Square
• St. Kierans College: It is located on the College Road of Kilkenny and was founded in 1782. It is one of the most famous medieval buildings in the city.
• Bateman’s Quay
• Ormonde Road
• The Court House: The Court House is located on the site of an ancient castle built around 13th century. It was transformed into a courthouse in the 18th century and still houses the local district and circuit courts. It also serves as an exhibition venue during the Kilkenny Arts Festival in August.
• Rothe House: The house was constructed by John Rothe Fitz Piers between 1594 and 1610, on the Burgage Plot he acquired as one of the city’s leading citizens. The Rothe family along with few other wealthy families controlled Kilkenny’s trade until the 17th century. The house is now a museum of John Rothe’s life and times.
