Sightseeing Tour of Petra, the ‘Rose-Red’ City - Overview

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra, a city that is arguably the most beautiful in all of the Middle East. A legacy of the Nabataeans, the site of this magnificent city was lost to the world for over 1000 years until its rediscovery in 1812 AD. Carved into rose-coloured stone, Petra is one of Jordan’s national treasures.

The ancient city has rock-cut obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets. High above, overlooking the Red Mountains is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery. Within the famous Petra ruins are the Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum, both of which showcase fascinating artefacts unearthed from excavations in the Petra region.

Sightseeing Tour of Petra, the ‘Rose-Red’ City - Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car/mini van and taken on a sightseeing tour of Petra.

Arrive at Petra where you will be met by a local English-speaking guide who will take you on a guided tour around the impressive Petra ruins. This ancient city was carved out of the distinctive rose-red coloured craggy rocks by the Nabateans, an industrious Arab tribe which settled here more than 2,000 years ago.

Petra comprises a complete urban infrastructure which includes temples, baths, private houses, high places, paved streets, public buildings, markets, theaters, reservoirs and cisterns.

Its entrance, a one-kilometer long fissure through the towering cliffs, the ‘Siq, provides a dramatic approach and induction to the city. You will be taken on a short horseback ride through the Siq (a distance of about 1 kilometer) and down to the Treasury. The narrow winding path through the canyon dramatically opens up to expose the awesome facade of the Treasury (Al-Kazneh). Carved out of the dusky pink rock-face, the Treasury dominates the landscape. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabataean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people.

Continue to the massive Nabataean-built Roman-style theatre, which could seat 3,000 people. Explore the still-intact several obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets.

High above the Petra Valley is the Monastery (El Deir) and the High Place of the Sacrifice (Al Madbah). A flight of 800 rock-cut steps will take you there.

Within the site are also two excellent museums, the Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum, both of which represent finds from excavations in the Petra region and an insight into Petra's colourful past.

Lunch will be within the Petra site (payable direct.)

Inside the site, several artisans from the town of Wadi Musa and a nearby Bedouin settlement have set up small stalls selling local handicrafts, such as pottery and Bedouin jewellery and bottles of striated multi-coloured sands from the area

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Amman.
