Floating Market and River Kwai Tour - Overview

T-shirts, silk dress, toys, fruits, vegetables, snacks, hats – go on a family sightseeing trip to famous attractions around Bangkok. The Damnoen Saduak or Floating Market typifies the quintessential image of Thailand - wooden canoes laden with multi-coloured fruits and vegetables, paddled by Thai women wearing indigo-hued clothes and wide-brimmed straw hats, and makes for great photo shoot as well.

Learn about the grim history of the world-famous ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’. Movies and books have highlighted the sufferings of the Allied Prisoners Of War (POW) who built the bridge during World War II. A new bridge has been constructed and much of the railway track dismantled soon after the war's end. Only the original track which cuts through Burmese and Thai jungles still remains. The War Museum, on the banks of the River Kwai, houses replicas of bamboo huts where the Allied POWs were held.

Tour the famous attractions around Bangkok and experience the charms of traditional Thai living and relive the horrors of WW II.

Floating Market and River Kwai Tour - Itinerary

This tour is available in two options – coach and private. The private option offers you greater flexibility and you can spend as much or as little time at any of the places that you visit. Unlike the tight schedules of coach tours, the private option allows you to do the tour at your own pace.

You will be picked up from your hotel/airport in the morning and taken in either a coach or private air conditioned vehicle (depending on the chosen option) on a sightseeing tour outside Bangkok. You will be accompanied by a local, English-speaking guide.

The tour highlights include:
Damnoen Saduak or Floating Market: The first stop will be at the famous Floating Market, located in the Ratchaburi Province, outside Bangkok. Called Klong Latphli by the locals, the Floating Market is active right from early morning. See wooden canoes laden with multi-coloured fruits and vegetables, paddled by Thai women wearing indigo-hued clothes and wide-brimmed straw hats – the quintessential picture of Thailand. You can also pick up souvenirs and other typically local products from this market.
River Kwai Bridge:Continue towards the famous bridge on the River Kwai. Internationally famous because of several motion pictures and books, the real bridge near Kanchanaburi, Thailand, is a different bridge than the movie version. The Bangkok-Rangoon railway bridge over the Kwai river in the Burma-Thailand jungle was built over several months starting October 1942 by more than 80,000 Asian slave labour civilians and Allied POWs as part of the Death Railway to supply Japanese troops in Burma from Rangoon. Still in use today, the bridge was the target of frequent Allied bombing raids during World War II and was rebuild after war ended. The curved spans of the bridge are the original sections.
War Museum: Located on the banks of the River Kwai near the famous Bridge, the War Museum has a collection of World War II memorabilia such as war instruments, photographs, uniforms, etc, of the POWs. You can also see replica of bamboo huts where the Allied POWs were held.
Death Railway: In 1943, thousands of Allied Prisoners of War worked on the Death Railway under the imperial Japanese Army in order to construct part of the 415 kilometre long Burma-Thailand railway. This railway was meant to move men and supplies to the Burmese front where the Japanese were fighting the British. A daily train still runs along the historical route from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok Railway Station.

A train ride on the Death Railway will give you an idea of the plight of the soldiers as you travel pass more than 600 high bridges, and deep mountain cuttings, near the River Kwai.

There will also be some free time for lunch.

At the end of the eight-hour tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel/airport.
